Cadmium Telluride (CdTe)

A compound of Cadmium and Tellurium, this semiconducting material is used to make thin-film solar cells, and can be alloyed with mercury to make different types of optical detectors including X-Ray, Gamma, and infrared. This material also sees applications in electro-optic modulators because it has the greatest electro-optic coefficient of the linear electro-optic effect from II-Vi compound crystals.
