Niobium Nitride (NbN)

Niobium Nitride is used in infrared light detectors as well as an absorbing ARC coating. When cooled to ~16 K, this material becomes a superconductor which is where most of its use is derived. In this superconductive state, it is integral to astronomy, and all types of telecommunications due to its ability to sense even single protons in the wavelength range between 1mu – 10mu.
