Tungsten Carbide (WC)

This carbide of tungsten is typically sintered from its powder form which appears as a grey powder. As a solid ceramic, it has a Vickers number of 2600 and ranks between 9 & 9.5 on the Mohs scale. WC exists in two morphologies: hexagonal (space group P6m2, No. 187) & and Rock Salt (space group Fm3m No.225). Tungsten carbide has uses that take advantage of its toughness, which includes drill bits, neutron reflectors, as surgical instruments, and even as jewelry.
