Boron (B)

Boron is atomic number 5 on the table, and in a crystalline form is silvery to black, or in its amorphous form is a brown powder. This essential element is mostly mined from the earth, where it is usually found in naturally occurring compounds like borax and kernite. Most of the earth’s boron exists in its water, as water-soluble borate minerals. Boron sees use as a chemical additive in fiberglass for both its ability to insulate, as well as its structure-strengthening capabilities.  Furthermore, borosilicate glass and semiconductors both use boron respectively for its help in reducing thermal shock and as a dopant.

One of the most notable uses of Boron is in nuclear reactors as a neutron absorber due to its high cross-section for neutron capture. This element sees use in the production of detergents, bleach, and other cleaning materials. Additionally, Boron compounds, like borax and boric acid, are significant in making glass and ceramics.
