Cadmium Selenide (CdSe)

Cadmium Selenide is an n-type semiconductor with a black to red-black appearance & comes in three different morphologies (wurtzite, sphalerite, and rock-salt crystal structure formations). In addition, Cadmium Selenide is transparent to Infrared light and is used in photoresistors and windows. Cadmium Selenide acts as an II-IV semiconductor, showing significant photoconductive and photovoltaic properties. Additionally, Cadmium Selenide has a band gap of about 1.74 eV at room temperature, placing it in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This makes it sensitive to visible light. It commonly crystallizes in two main structures: the zinc blended (cubic) and the wurtzite (hexagonal) structure.

Equally important, CdSe sees use in making quantum dots, which are nanoscale semiconductor particles that have quantum mechanical properties. These dots find applications in solar cells, photodetectors, and biomedical imaging. Moreover, due to its optical properties, it serves as a material in optoelectronics, used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, and photodetectors.
