Silicon Carbide (SiC)

Silicon Carbide is a compound of Silicon and Carbon and has different appearances depending on the method of preparation. Created by sintering grains of Silicon Carbide, this material serves as car clutches, brake pads, and bulletproof vests. Incredibly, this compound also occurs naturally as the incredibly rare mineral moissanite. The durability of the compound, coupled with its semiconducting and optical abilities, makes it a perfect material for astronomical mirrors for telescopes. The Herschel Space Telescope is one example of a telescope that was created with industrial-level chemical vapor deposited (CVD) grown Silicon Carbide mirrors.
