Titanium Nitride (TiN)

This incredibly hard ceramic compound of Titanium and Nitrogen serves use in bio-compatible coating for implants, as well as for drill bits, milling cutters, and suspension forks in the automotive industry. TiN has found a home in microelectronics as well where thin films of the material are used as conductive connections to work the circuit. This material is chemically a ceramic, but in many instances has properties that make it similar to a barrier metal. Titanium Nitride seems to be a perfect candidate material for Bio-MEMS since this material is used in microelectronics, and is very bio-compatible.
