Ytterbium is atomic number 70 and appears as a silver-white metal. As a lanthanide, Ytterbium is most commonly seen in its +3 oxidation state. Most Ytterbium is mined, and recovered from monazite sand, with world production of around 50 tonnes per year and estimated reserves at one million tonnes. This subsequent material is utilized as a dopant in stainless steel and even as an active laser media.
