Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3)

Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3), or Aluminium Dioxide (a.k.a Alumina) is one of the most common oxides of Aluminum. Natural crystalline forms of the material most commonly occur as Corundum, and when trace amounts of chromium are present in the Corundum, we call the stone a Ruby. A Sapphire is a Corundum that contains various trace amounts of Iron, Titanium, Chromium, Vanadium, and/or Magnesium. Aluminum Oxide is as useful as it appears beautiful. Alumina has high thermal conductivity (30 Wm−1K−1), is insoluble in water, and is used as an abrasive. Pure aluminum forms a passivation layer in picoseconds after being exposed to air which protects the material. Despite the ionic bond structure, Aluminum Oxide is an excellent electrical insulator due to its wide band gap.
