Antimony Telluride (Sb2Te3)

Antimony Telluride is a binary chalcogenide of antimony and tellurium. It has use as an n-type or p-type semiconductor depending on the dopant. This material is a grey, crystalline solid whose atomic structure consists of alternating layers of (2) Antimony and (3) Tellurium. Research into Sb2Te3 explores applications like low-cost thermoelectric material, which means some of this material’s applications include solid-state refrigeration, thermal sensors/detectors, and power generation. Materials like this (more commonly Bi2Te3) are being studied for their ability to not only cool systems but also to use unwanted waste heat to generate electricity.

Additionally, Antimony Telluride is a phase-change material. Phase-change materials rapidly shift between amorphous and crystalline structures, which is useful in phase-change memory devices. Furthermore, Sb2Te3 is a thermoelectric material meaning it can convert temperature differences directly into electric voltage, and vice versa. Optically has use in infrared detectors and other sensor devices.
