Barium Zirconate (BZO)

Barium Zirconate, known as BZO (BaZrO3), is an electroceramic used extensively in the solid-state memory market. Barium Zirconate has a high dielectric constant, which makes it suitable for applications in capacitors and other electronic components. Interestingly, BaZrO3 exhibits proton conductivity making it a potential material in protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) and some other zirconates. When proton conductor materials, like Barium Zirconate, are sputtered as a thin film they become an essential part of PEMFC fuel cells. Another application being studied is using Barium Zirconate as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) due to its proton conduction ability.

This unconventional semiconductor is used as a very stable dielectric layer in magnetic recording devices and has thin-film qualities that warrant more study and discovery.
