Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO3)

Bismuth Ferrite, also commonly known as BFO, is both ferroelectric as well as magnetoelectric. Even more interesting, it also exhibits antiferromagnetic properties due to the patterning of its molecules. Its applications include magnetics, spintronics, and photovoltaics. Due to its wide band gap in the visible light range, BFO is studied for its potential in photovoltaic applications and photocatalysis for environmental cleanup. Additionally, BiFeO3 exhibits piezoelectric properties, which are useful in sensors and actuators that require conversion between mechanical and electrical energy. Research indicates a level of biocompatibility, suggesting the potential for certain medical applications. The high Curie temperature of bismuth ferrite means that it can reach up to around 830 degrees Celsius before it loses its ferroelectric properties. BiFeO3 also exhibits a significant remnant polarization, which is a measure of the permanent electric dipole moment in ferroelectric materials.
