Bismuth Selenide (Bi2Se3)

Bismuth Selenide (Bi2Se3) is a grey-colored compound of bismuth and selenium. Due to its layered crystal structure (covalently bound five-atom layers), Bi2Se3 is considered a Topological Insulator. Topological Insulators conduct electricity on their surface while remaining an insulator in bulk form. Additionally, it exhibits low thermal conductivity which is beneficial to thermoelectric applications for efficient heat-to-electricity conversion. Bismuth Selenide has interesting optical properties, including a high refractive index and strong photoresponse, which are useful in optoelectronic applications. Bi2Se3 is a well-known thermoelectric material, capable of converting temperature differences into electric voltage, and vice versa. As such, Bi2Se3 has applications ranging from advanced electronic devices to thermoelectric generators, and infrared detectors. Bismuth Selenide (Bi2Se3) is the subject of extensive Quantum Physics Research, especially in studies related to quantum computing and novel electronic states.
