Bismuth Telluride (Bi2Te3)

Bismuth Telluride is a grey compound of Bismuth and Tellurium. Bi2Te3 is best known for its excellent thermoelectric properties, meaning it can convert temperature differences directly into electric voltage and vice versa. This makes it a prime material for thermoelectric generators and Peltier coolers. Bismuth Telluride is also a renowned topological insulator, a state of matter with the unique property of conducting electricity only on its surface while acting as an insulator internally. Moreover, Bismuth Telluride has a narrow band gap, contributing to its effective thermoelectric performance at room temperature. Its primary uses include solid-state refrigeration and as a power generator in space probes, where it converts the heat from radioactive decay or solar heat into electricity. As compared to other thermoelectric materials that use lead or cadmium, Bismuth Telluride is considered more environmentally friendly.
