Magnesium Oxide (MgO)

Magnesium oxide is an important refractory material with high thermal conductivity and low electrical conductivity. This material sees most of its use in linings in spiral stove-top heating elements and is also used extensively in crucibles. Optically, MgO is transparent from 0.3 to 7 µm, and as a thin film can be used as an oxide barrier in spin-tunneling devices. Compared to Al2O3 which has a spin polarization of around 40-60%, MgO has been shown to achieve around 85%. The magnetoresistance of MgO is significantly higher than that of Al2O3 and stable up to around 700 K.
